The official recorded history of the cottage dates only to 1949 when the property was first registered for land transfer purposes. Three forestry cottages were moved onto this property (which was part of a farm) by an Auckland journalist to use as a fishing cabin. There was no direct access to the city of Rotorua as Koutu Road which was a dirt/gravel road did not extend beyond the Koutu shops - a kilometer away. Residents of various other fishing huts and other people squatting on the edge of the lake and Kawaha Point used a path along the lakeside to get to town.
The ninety year old cottages which had been used by forestry workers in the "backblocks" are made from native wood with tongue and groove interiors including the ceilings. The three were joined together and doors cut to provide access between the rooms. A fireplace was located in what is now the back bedroom. The lounge and bathroom were added in the early 50's. The main house was built in 1962 and the oak tree was planted at about this time.
The cottage has been substantially refurbished recently to retain the natural charm and characteristics of the building.
